Want To Be Happier? Here’s The Secret!

We are heading into my absolute favorite season, and I couldn’t be more excited!

Yes, it’s finally fall…but more specifically, it’s almost Thanksgiving!?? I mean, if I could make Thanksgiving last all year, I totally would!

But since I can’t, we’ve decided to just bring a little bit of Thanksgiving into our everyday lives.

Seriously, hang around me for 5 minutes and you’ll probably hear me talk about this topic.

It really is that important!!!

I mean, did you know that what you focus on, you actually get more of? Man, when you really understand that fact and how it works in your everyday life, it changes how you see the world. It changes how you see your family, your relationships, yourself.

Imagine if you woke up in the morning, looked around, and noticed all of the things in your life you weren’t happy with… Maybe you look over and see socks on the floor, because your husband didn’t put them in the hamper. You walk down the stairs and see the kids’ toys on the floor. There are dishes in the sink. Unopened mail on the counter. Your to-do list is already staring you in the face, and the day has barely even begun.

How do you feel?

Frustrated? Overwhelmed? Exhausted? Maybe even hopeless?

And when you feel that way, you tend to find even more reasons to feel that way, right? Your focus is on the negative, so what do you get? More negative.

I get it! Trust me, I know what that’s like! I know how that feels.

But there’s something so powerful I’ve learned, and it has helped me to overcome that frustration, overwhelm and exhaustion.

Are you ready for this?

It works both ways! It really does! If what you focus on is what you get more of, what do you think happens when you focus on the positive?

Yep, you get more positive!

So, how do you focus on the positive, even when things are hard? Even when you’re struggling in your marriage, or you’re having a hard time with the kids, or money is tight, or you’re just flat-out exhausted from life?

One word: gratitude.

I know you’ve probably heard this before, but gratitude really is a game-changer! I know it sure was for me 5 years ago. I made gratitude part of my morning routine, and it is still a key part of my morning, to this day.

Why? Because it keeps me focused on what’s going right. It reminds me how God has been moving in my life.

Even if there are socks on the floor, I can choose to be grateful that I have a floor for them to be on, and I have a husband I love (who sometimes leaves socks on the floor?).

Even if there are toys in the floor, I can choose to be grateful for the laughter my kids and I shared as we played with those toys the night before.

Even if there are dishes in the sink, I can choose to be grateful for the food we cooked and the meal we shared as a family.

Do you get what I’m saying? Gratitude changes your perspective. It changes the way you see the world. It’s almost like a lens you see the world through.

When you choose to see the world through that lens, and you focus on all of those positive things, you actually begin to see even more positivity!

You begin to notice things all around you that you are grateful for. Those few moments of peace and quiet, as you sit down and drink your coffee with your spouse in the morning. The laughter as the kids come running down the stairs. The food on your plate. The few minutes you carve out in the middle of the day to sit on the floor and play trains with your youngest. The work you do, that provides for your family. The cars you drive. The house you live in. The love that fills your home.

Is every moment perfect? No way! Do things always go right? Nope!

But when you focus on the good things, that’s what you get more of.

So, I have a challenge for you…

For the next 30 days, what if you grab a journal write down 3 things you are grateful for every single morning? If you don’t have a journal, just grab some paper, staple it together, and BAM- you’ve got yourself a gratitude journal!

Just 3 things…that’s all it takes to begin to set your focus in the right direction. And remember, what you focus on is what you get more of. So intentionally FOCUS on the good in your life!

If you really want to take this to the next level, make a goal to write 3 different and specific things each day. Studies have shown this is the most effective way to cultivate gratitude.

I do this every single day. I wouldn’t be asking you to do it if I didn’t think it was truly going to help you! I’m asking you because I know just how powerful it is! It really is life-changing!

So, commit to this for the next 30 days, and I promise you will be happier and more fulfilled. What do you have to lose?
